145,000 new businesses start up each year in the United States. The Small Business Administration keeps statistics on new business start-ups and failures. They report that more than half of new businesses fail within the first five years. This figure is also stated by a study done by Inc. Magazine and the National Business Incubator Association. Eighty percent of small businesses close within the first year. In 2003, there were approximately 23.7 million businesses in the U.S. A total of 520,277 patent applications were applied for at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office in 2010.
